Burroughs (American, 1914 \u2013 1997)<br><strong>Nagual Art<\/strong>, n.d.<br>spray-paint on paper<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u201cNagual Art\u201d refers to the Mesoamerican idea of the nagual\u2014a person with the power to transform and shapeshift into animal forms. For William S. Burroughs the chance techniques used to produce this art offered viewers a \u201cport of entry\u201d into an alternate universe. Like the cut-ups he produced with Brion Gysin, Burroughs\u2019s paintings embrace creative methods that exceed the artist\u2019s control and defy any sense of predictability. As he stated, \u201cHe who would invoke the unpredictable must cultivate accidents and randomness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William S.
