The\nelephant fish (family <em>Mormyridae<\/em>) are medium-sized freshwater fish\nabundant in the Nile. The elephant fish gets its name from its elongated\ndownturned snout, which can be seen clearly in this example. A settlement in\nUpper Egypt, Per-Medjed, was named after the fish and is now better known under\nits Greek name Oxyrhynchus. Revered by the Egyptians, the Medjed is often seen\nwith the horned disk on its head. This fish was likely worn as an amulet, as\nevidenced by the ring attached to the back of the headpiece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gypsum<\/strong><br><strong>Laguna del Rey, Coahuila, Mexico<\/strong><br>11 x 14 x 10 inches <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gypsum is a\nsoft calcium sulfate mineral (hardness 2 out of 10), used as a fertilizer and\nas the main ingredient in plaster and drywall.
