(est. 1925),\npublisher<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian\nHamilton\u2019s biography of J. D. Salinger was suppressed from publication when the\nauthor and his publisher lost the case of <em>Salinger\nv. Random House<\/em> in 1987. When the reclusive Salinger read the uncorrected\nadvance proof of <em>J. D. Salinger: A\nWriting Life<\/em>, he objected to Hamilton\u2019s inclusion of 30,000 words from\nSalinger\u2019s unpublished correspondence. Hamilton revised his biography with\nparaphrasing, but Salinger still objected and brought suit against Random House\nfor copyright violation, breach of contract, and unfair competition. Random\nHouse lost in appeal and was barred from publishing the book, making the\nhandful of distributed proofs legendary rarities. Hamilton\u2019s rewritten book, <em>In Search of J. D. Salinger<\/em> (1988), was\nas much about the travails of researching his subject as it was about the\nwriter\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamilton, Ian.<em> J. D.
