Jane Bowles (1917-1973), author<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Bowles (1910-1999), executor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disabled\nby a stroke in 1957, Jane Bowles\u2019s literary output was limited to one novel,\none play, and a volume of stories. After Jane\u2019s illness, Paul Bowles managed\nhis wife\u2019s business correspondence and literary contracts, keeping her work in\nprint and arranging for ongoing publications. Galleys are shown here for Paul\nBowles\u2019s introduction to Everything is\nNice<\/em>, in which he described his role in preparing an unfinished story for\ninclusion in this collection. He also described his wife\u2019s depression and\ndisgust with her situation, recounting how she modified the title of Collected Works <\/em>that she was inscribing\nfor a friend, \u201cThe Collected Works of Dead Jane Bowles.\u201d Jane died after years\nof incapacitation at the Clinica de Los Angeles in M\u00e1laga, Spain, in 1973.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
