Zagarell, editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nreclamation of Alice Dunbar-Nelson\u2019s literary legacy, which began in the 1980s\nand continues today, has come in large part as a result of the socio-political\ndynamics of late twentieth-century feminist and Africana studies. Edited by\nDunbar-Nelson scholar Akasha Gloria Hull, the volume of Dunbar-Nelson\u2019s\ncollected works displayed here dates back to this important period. Part of the\nSchomburg Library series on African American women writers of the nineteenth\ncentury, the volume includes scholarly editions of Dunbar-Nelson\u2019s two\npublished books of short stories, reviews, and essays, <em>Violets<\/em> (1895) and<em> The\nGoodness of St. Rocque <\/em>(1899).\n\nMore recently, <em>Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers <\/em>devoted\nan entire issue to Alice Dunbar-Nelson. Written in conversation with previous\nrecovery work done on the author, new understandings of Dunbar-Nelson were\nderived from a careful analysis of the archival record. In this example,\nCaroline Gebhard, Katherine Adams, and Sandra A. Zagarell\u2019s article,\n\u201cReflections on the Archive: Alice Ruth Moore Dunbar-Nelson,\u201d seeks to\ncomplicate a previously held view that Dunbar-Nelson\u2019s work only rarely\ncontended with race in her characters in an overt way. The article shows how\nthe manuscript version of Dunbar-Nelson\u2019s \u201cThe Praline Woman\u201d evidences a more\ndirect description of the central character that includes clearer textual\nsignifiers of her race.
