First edition.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nCritic Henry Louis Gates has written, \u201cIf one had to identify the single most influential shaping force in modern Black literary history, one would probably have to point to Wright and the publication of&nbsp;<em>Native Son<\/em>.\u201d This landmark work presented the world with Bigger Thomas, a tragically flawed product of a racist society. It sits firmly in the tradition of protest fiction, and reflects the social determinism Wright discovered in the theories of the Chicago School of Urban Sociology. Interestingly, the book was also a Book-of-the-Month Club selection with a large white readership. This first edition of the book has a Book-of-the Month Club review laid in.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>How Bigger was Born<\/em>;&nbsp;<em>the Story of Native Son<\/em>. New York: Harper &amp; Brothers, 1940. Two first editions, one an author\u2019s autograph copy.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this essay Wright states that the main character of his novel&nbsp;<em>Native Son<\/em>&nbsp;is an amalgam of Black men the author observed while growing up in the Jim Crow South. Further, Bigger is also based on the many whites Wright saw after moving to Chicago, whites living under the \u201cruthless and impersonal commodity profit machine,\u201d of which the Jim Crow South was but a part. Wright explains that&nbsp;<em>Native Son<\/em>&nbsp;as a warning about the dangerous potential inherent in such a system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-95a3cb5b30198faa3fc382190f3eeb1e\">James Baldwin, 1924-1987<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Notes of a Native Son<\/em>. Boston: Beacon Press, 1955. First edition.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In one essay (\u201cEverybody\u2019s Protest Novel\u201d) in this famous collection, Baldwin presents a harsh critique of protest fiction, including&nbsp;<em>Native Son<\/em>. In Baldwin\u2019s view, Wright\u2019s novel presents a character (Bigger) who is an implicit acceptance of \u201cmonstrous\u201d images associated with Black men. By contrast, Baldwin suggests that African Americans need to recognize the humanity they possess, rather than seeking to reclaim it through the type of violence Bigger carries out. Before the appearance of Baldwin\u2019s piece, Wright had functioned as a mentor to the younger author.
