{"id":82,"date":"2024-02-22T11:53:28","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T16:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/poetry-as-activism-in-conversation-with-chicory\/?page_id=82"},"modified":"2024-07-30T15:50:34","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T20:50:34","slug":"splash-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/poetry-as-activism-in-conversation-with-chicory\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry as Activism in Conversation with Chicory\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In partnership with the Mellon-funded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/poetry-as-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Poetry as Activism Project<\/a>, the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press will host the traveling exhibition&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prattlibrary.org\/chicory\/exhibit\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.prattlibrary.org\/chicory\/exhibit\">Soul of the Butterfly: Chicory Magazine and Baltimore\u2019s Black Arts Activism<\/a><\/em>, on view in Room 116 of Morris Library from February 22 through March 25, 2024. The exhibition&nbsp;<em>Poetry as Activism in Conversation with Chicory<\/em>&nbsp;will be on view in conjunction with the traveling exhibition in the Information Room of Morris Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Soul of the Butterfly<\/em>&nbsp;explores the relationship between poetry and activism in Baltimore, Maryland, and offers the UD community the opportunity to consider this relationship in a Mid-Atlantic regional context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As shared by the Pratt Library, the exhibition, curated by Mary Rizzo and the Chicory Revitalization Project, \u201cuses&nbsp;<em>Chicory<\/em>&nbsp;[magazine] to tell the story of how Black artist-activists in Baltimore have been making change since the 1960s. Featuring poetry, artwork, and photos, it reminds us why the Baltimore&nbsp;<em>Afro-American<\/em>&nbsp;called&nbsp;<em>Chicory<\/em>&nbsp;\u2018the most authentic microphone of Black folks talking ever devised.\u2019\u201d All issues of&nbsp;<em>Chicory<\/em>&nbsp;magazine are available via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.digitalmaryland.org\/digital\/collection\/mdcy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Maryland<\/a>. For more information about&nbsp;<em>Chicory<\/em>, watch a short&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7C5ksJbLARQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a>&nbsp;created by the Chicory Revitalization Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Poetry as Activism in Conversation with Chicory<\/em>&nbsp;showcases how artist-activists used their works as well as community publishing to organize for change. This includes works by&nbsp;<em>Chicory<\/em>&nbsp;editors Sam Cornish and Melvin Edward Brown published by Baltimore-based publishing houses.
