{"id":87,"date":"2020-01-21T10:41:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T15:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/two-steps-forward\/?page_id=87"},"modified":"2020-04-21T14:08:39","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T19:08:39","slug":"maintaining-balance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/two-steps-forward\/home\/maintaining-balance\/","title":{"rendered":"Maintaining Balance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The personal narratives of faculty and graduate students of color tell stories of resiliency in the face of repeated traumas.&nbsp; Regardless of ethnicity, the women academics represented in these works discuss campus climates and classroom environments that question their competencies, subject them to microaggressions, and attempt to invalidate their cultural knowledge.&nbsp; The authors discuss individual strategies they\u2019ve developed to not only cope, but to excel in academia.&nbsp; The works examine the gendered nature of organizational structures that disadvantage those female academics who are also caregivers.&nbsp; Recent works attempt to shift discourse away from \u2018at risk\u2019 students or faculty to \u2018at risk\u2019 institutions\u2014institutions with roadblocks for women of color and other diverse populations seeking to transform the academy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cherrel Miller Dyce and Toni Milton Williams, in&nbsp;<em>D.I.V.A. Diaries: The Road to the Ph.D. and Stories of Black Women Who Have Endured<\/em>, discuss the role of their group \u2014the Distinguished, Intellectual, Virtuous, Academic Sistas (DIVAS) Collective\u2014that was formed to address the unique concerns facing Black female doctoral students attending&nbsp; predominately White institutions.&nbsp; The collective aims to empower them to succeed \u201cat all odds.\u201d Asian American women, while not considered&nbsp;<em>underrepresented<\/em>&nbsp;minorities, lend their voices to scholarly discussions on \u2018otherness\u2019 and encounters with invisible barriers within academia in Bow\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Asian American Feminisms<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leslie Bow.<em>&nbsp;Asian American Feminisms<\/em>.
