{"id":565,"date":"2020-04-23T10:42:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T15:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/votes-for-delaware-women\/?page_id=565"},"modified":"2020-04-28T10:47:38","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T15:47:38","slug":"8b-ratification","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/votes-for-delaware-women\/home\/8-drama-in-dover-1920\/8b-ratification\/","title":{"rendered":"8b &#8211; Ratification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once\nCongress had passed the 19th Amendment and sent it to the states for\nratification in June, 1919, Delaware suffragists geared up: first, to get the\ngovernor to call a special session of the legislature in 1920 in order to\nratify, and then to pressure members of the legislature to vote affirmatively.\nA handwritten petition from a group of white women in Frankford, some of whom\nsigned in pencil, offers a contrast with the skilled lobbying of the Delaware\nEqual Suffrage Association. Its 1919 letterhead, headed \u201cEnfranchise Delaware\nWomen by a Special Legislative Session,\u201d broadcast its goal to any recipient.\nNewly designed stationery used in 1919 and 1920 bristled with the names and\ntowns of women from all three of the state\u2019s counties. With references to the suffrage views of various du Ponts as well as to the political hot potato of a controversial new school code, the letter displayed her assured manner with the state\u2019s top politician. A Democrat herself, Hilles shrewdly inserted a reference to the way in which Townsend\u2019s fellow Republicans might \u201cmake themselves responsible\u201d for the amendment\u2019s ratification. By implication, if ratification was not a \u201csuccess,\u201d suffragists would know which party to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Florence Bayard Hilles (1865-1954). Facsimile image courtesy of the Delaware Public Archives.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1920: DELAWARE WOMEN&#8217;S COLLEGE STUDENTS AS VOTERS<\/strong> &#8211; Dueling columns on the front page of the October 28, 1920, issue of the <em>Women\u2019s College<\/em> <em>Reporter<\/em> demonstrated the students\u2019 deep engagement with a central issue in the 1920 political campaign: whether the United States should join the new League of Nations. The paper\u2019s Political Notes column chronicled the formation of both Democratic and Republican student clubs. A straw poll taken at the College gave the victory to the Democratic candidate for president, Ohio governor James M. Cox, over the Republican candidate, Ohio U. S. Senator Warren G. Harding.
