{"id":256,"date":"2020-01-07T11:25:23","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T16:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/whitman\/?page_id=256"},"modified":"2020-01-07T11:27:01","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T16:27:01","slug":"early-writing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/exhibitions.lib.udel.edu\/whitman\/home\/early-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Early Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAmbition, [poem], in&nbsp;<em>Brother Jonathan<\/em>&nbsp;1 (29 January 1842), p. 5.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally published in the&nbsp;<em>Long Island Democrat<\/em>&nbsp;in 1836, \u201cAmbition\u201d is one of Whitman\u2019s first published poems.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Brother Jonathan<\/em>&nbsp;was the first weekly illustrated publication in the United States.&nbsp; The name of the publication was a reference to Brother Jonathan, a fictional character personifying New England, similar in appearance to the figure of Uncle Sam.&nbsp; Another issue within this first volume of&nbsp;<em>Brother Jonathan<\/em>&nbsp;contains Whitman&#8217;s essay on Charles Dickens, &#8220;Boz and Democracy,&#8221; which celebrated Dickens&#8217; 1842 visit to New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Franklin Evans: Or, the Inebriate. A Tale of the Times<\/em>.&nbsp; New York:&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;<em>New World,<\/em>&nbsp;1842.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This novel is Walt Whitman&#8217;s first separately published work.&nbsp; The novel takes up the entire \u201cExtra\u201d issue of&nbsp;<em>The New World&nbsp;<\/em>and chronicles the life of Franklin Evans, who comes to New York as a young man to better his fortune, but is quickly corrupted and eventually becomes a drunkard.&nbsp; After numerous misfortunes, including the death of two wives, Franklin Evans concludes that &#8220;total abstinence&#8221; is the only safe course for him to follow.&nbsp; Although Whitman was sympathetic to the temperance movement, which was then at its height in America, later in life he admitted that he wrote the story for the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Tomb Blossoms,\u201d in&nbsp;<em>Voices from the Press: A Collection of Sketches, Essays, and Poems<\/em>, edited by James J. Brenton. New-York: Charles B. Norton, 1850.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This story was originally published in the January 1842 issue of&nbsp;<em>The United States Magazine and Democratic Review<\/em>.
