Curtis Taylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whitman, Walt, \u201cPoetry To&#8211;day in America\u2014Shakspere\u2014The Future,\u201d in&nbsp;<em>Specimen Days: &amp; Collect<\/em>. Philadelphia: Rees Welsh &amp; Co, 1882.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This essay, written in 1881, is Walt Whitman&#8217;s most succinct commentary on the evolution of poetry in America.&nbsp; This first printing of&nbsp;<em>Specimen Days<\/em>&nbsp;bears Whitman\u2019s presentation inscription to the important Philadelphia ornithologist Thomas G. Gentry (1843\u20131905).&nbsp; Gentry had written Whitman to ask if he could use the poem &#8220;The Man-of-War Bird&#8221; in an anthology of bird poetry he was preparing, but appears never to have completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whitman, Walt, \u201cHave We a National Literature?\u201d in&nbsp;<em>The North American Review<\/em>, 152 (March 1891), 332-338.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this essay Whitman argues that while the United States has produced great authors and works of literature, it must produce literature that reflects the vast geographic and cultural range that comprises America and until this happens America cannot be said to have a true national literature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whitman, Walt.&nbsp;<em>Gems from Walt Whitman<\/em>, selected by Elizabeth P. Gould was a great admirer of Whitman\u2019s poetry.&nbsp; This selection of excerpts from Whitman\u2019s poetry also prints Gould\u2019s poem \u201cTo Walt Whitman\u201d and her essay \u201cWalt Whitman Among the Soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[UD_EXHIBITION_ITEM]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whitman, Walt.&nbsp;<em>Salut Au Monde<\/em>. New York: Random House, 1930.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In &#8220;Salut au monde,&#8221; which first appeared in&nbsp;<em>Leaves of Grass<\/em>&nbsp;(1856), Walt Whitman presents his vision of the divine origin of human brotherhood and its eventual extension \u201cto all the inhabitants of the earth.\u201d&nbsp; This fine press edition of the poem was printed in Czechoslovakia in an edition of 390 copies, each signed by the artist and type designer Vojt\u011bch Preissig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whitman, Walt.&nbsp;<em>Lafayette in Brooklyn<\/em>.
