Dorothy Miller was born in 1931 and obtained a degree in chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University. She worked as a chemical analyst for DuPont and settled with her husband, Robert, in Newark, where they built a home and raised their family. Miller took a field ornithology class at the University of Delaware in the mid-1960s and became an avid birder. She was president of the Newark Bird Club, a group with growing interest in land preservation as new housing developments sprang up in the 1960s and there was increased talk of a dam project to create a reservoir in the White Clay Creek Valley.
