Alice Dunbar Nelson Papers (MSS 0113)

The Southern Workman
was a monthly publication established by the Hampton Institute Press at Hampton Institute in 1872. The Hampton Institute, located in Hampton, Virginia, is a historically Black research university. Founded in 1868 as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute until 1930 when it became known as Hampton Institute. The Southern Workman featured reports from returned students, letters from Hampton graduates, Hampton school record, and the president’s message. This is just a small sampling of what the monthly publication featured.

The publication indicates to readers that “The Southern Workman and Hampton School Record, reports works for the progress of the Black and Red races of our country. Each number contains a broadside of letters from some of this school’s 723 graduates who have, since 1868, taught 129,475 children in over twelve states in the South and West.”

The publication was fairly short with only 16 pages though reduced to 12 pages from July to October.
