Prophets for a New Day

This was the next poetry collection Walker published after For My People. Many of the poems make symbolic connections between civil rights figures and Biblical prophets of old. One example is “Micah,” written in honor of Medgar Evers: “Micah was a young man of the people/Who came up from the Streets of Mississippi/and Cried out his Vision to his people.”  Other poems link Martin Luther King, Jr. with Moses and Aaron, who led the Hebrew people out of bondage in Egypt.
