Black History

These artifacts and documents exemplify Dr. Newton’s commitment to the collecting and sharing of Black history and his work with the community to preserve local Black history in particular. For example, Howard High School–now Howard High School of Technology–is a historic Black high school in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Newton worked with Howard alumni and Pauline A. Young (the school’s librarian) to document the school’s history. Dr. Newton participated in organizations that focused on Black life and history, and he worked to recover the history of numerous African Americans, whose stories he shared in the classroom, lectures, publications, and historic markers.
