Education

These items reflect Dr. Newton’s impact and dedication as an educator at the University of Delaware and in the greater community.

Dr. Newton came to UD in 1972, and in 1973, he founded and began serving as director of the Black American Studies Program (BAMS)–now the Department of Africana Studies. Dr. Newton also designed the logo for the program. He was committed to teaching students about Black culture and history, both in his BAMS courses and in his visits to public schools. His talent as an educator earned him several awards, and he was the fact-checker for the Little Known History of Black Facts, a booklet distributed by the McDonald’s company to schools.
