A sculptor, painter, printer, collage artist, and doodler, Dr. Newton was an award-winning artist who explored a number of mediums for portraying people and moments throughout his art career. He was the first African American to earn an art degree from North Carolina Central University, and he would go on to earn both an MFA and a Doctorate of Education, in the areas of art, art history, and art education. He taught art classes and exhibited his artwork across the United States. He was also an avid doodler, drawing on any paper whenever he was thinking or inspired.
