[Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before]
wood engraving on paper

This enigmatic image is paired with a specific line from Poe’s poem The Raven: “Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.” Doré’s approach to illustration in this impressive volume is largely evocative, instilling a sense of mystery and reflecting the gloom of the poem. His images are not literal visual descriptions of the text, but show an artist responding to and interpreting an author’s work. Francis Scott King engraved Doré’s image for this volume. Several different engravers were engaged to produce over 25 illustrations in this version of The Raven.

The Black Cat, 1901
engraving on paper

This graphically arresting yet enigmatically spare frontal image of a woman with a cat on her head relies on clean outlining and flat areas of black and white. While at first glance, it may not appear to convey narrative intent, here Aubrey Beardsley communicates many details of a climactic moment from Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “The Black Cat” (1845). Herbert S. Stone & Company’s portfolio was published based on Beardsley’s drawings originally rendered in 1894.
