In Afghanistan

In March 2010, a delegation led by Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) traveled to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. In a statement submitted for the record on May 12, Kaufman expressed his encouragement by civilians working with Afghans to deliver basic services to Afghan citizens and by the members of the military serving in that country. Yet, he observed that progress in building and training the Afghan National Police was slow, and in Afghanistan, the chief challenge continued to be “walking the tightrope required to balance our complex relationship with President Karzai.”
