On July 20, 2009, Senator Kaufman delivered a floor speech commemorating the 40th anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 mission when Neil Armstrong became the first man to step foot on the moon. The Apollo 11 mission was not only a major achievement in the sciences and engineering, it also placed the U.S. on the map as a world leader in innovation and led to federal investment in research and development in the sciences and engineering. In the floor speech, Kaufman also lauded President Barack Obama’s commitment to devote increased funding towards STEM research and development. He urged his colleagues to consider that the future of America’s preeminence amongst the global market lay with fostering “a new generation of engineers through education policies that emphasize science and math.”
