In October 2010, Senator Kaufman wrote an op-ed about the impact from the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. Kaufman discussed how a tragic event such as the oil spill can present an opportunity for young people to understand the potential for “making a difference” through the pursuit of STEM education, where they can learn skills like how to clean and purify contaminated water. Kaufman believed that the pursuit of STEM education and careers could potentially prevent future similar disasters. This op-ed is representative of Kaufman’s commitment towards prioritizing federal funding for STEM programs and education and for reaching out to young people to inform and inspire them to consider STEM careers and make a difference with their lives.
